Young passed away on March 20, 2024, at the age of 72, leaving behind close friends and family members to grieve his passing. It is encouraged that friends and family members share their sympathies with the family by posting them on this memorial page and sharing them with the family. Over the course of his childhood, Larry was raised in the neighborhood of Essex.

His graduation from Essex High School was in 1969, and he was a member of the class. After that, he became a student at Iowa Western Community College for a year before transferring to Wayne State College, where he majored in Physical Education. He eventually graduated from Wayne State College. Larry was able to strike up a conversation with everyone and never encountered a stranger in his life. Attending the activities of his sons and, later in life, his grandchildren was something he looked forward to doing. In addition to being a committed member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah, he served as the Past President of the Essex Optimist Club, was a member of the school board for the Essex Community Schools for more than 22 years, and served as President three times during that time.

Playing cards, participating in men’s softball, and most importantly, spending time with his cherished family were all activities that Larry enjoyed doing. He was also a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and enjoyed rooting for them. While attending St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah on December 17, 1977, he and Kelly Hansen exchanged their vows and became husband and wife. These three sons, Toby, Andy, and T.J., were born into this union, which was a blessing in disguise. In Essex, the family determined to make their home. In the early stages of his life, Larry worked a variety of occupations, including that of a manager at Pizza Hut, Eaton Manufacturing, and Howards Clothing at various points.

In 1976, he made the decision to devote his entire life to engaging in farming as a full-time occupation. A profession in which he continued to be actively involved up until the moment of his untimely death. Robert Young and Marice Young (Almquist), his brother Steve Young, and his mother-in-law Maureen Hansen all passed away before him. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his wife, Kelly Hansen, who resides in Essex; his sons, Tobias (Lora) of Remsen, Iowa; Andrew (Christine Shaw) of Bolton, Connecticut; and T. J. (Cortney) of Shenandoah; his grandchildren, Jake, Sam, and Beau Young of Bolton, Connecticut; Zoe, Mya Young of Shenandoah; Mickayla and Mikey LaVoie of Bolton, Connecticut; and his father-in-law, Harold Hansen, who resides in Shenandoah.

It is scheduled that a Mass will be conducted at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024 at 10:30 AM. The address of the church is 512 W Thomas Ave, Shenandoah, Iowa 51601. An interment service is scheduled to take place at the Rose Hill Cemetery on the 27th of March, 2024.
