Nick Baumann named Deputy Politics Editor

We are thrilled to share the news that Nick Baumann, a talented journalist who has extensive experience in managing teams and driving coverage of national politics, will be joining The Post in the role of deputy politics editor. Nick, who will be serving as the lead deputy to the senior politics editor, will assist in guiding the National politics staff in the execution of ambitious coverage of the presidential campaign of 2024, the White House, Congress, and state politics across all platforms.

After working as an editor for more than a decade publishing political news, enterprise, and investigations, Nick has decided to join The Post. Additionally, he possesses a vision for distinctive coverage, in addition to a profound awareness of the political climate in the United States at the present time and the landscape of digital media. As a leader who is committed to assisting in the development of the skills of reporters and editors, he has garnered a reputation among his colleagues as someone who is kind and has a strong eye for storytelling targets.

In his most recent position, he was the deputy Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times. In this role, he was responsible for leading coverage of the 2024 election campaign and editing daily, enterprise, and feature stories about Congress, the White House, and the immigration detention system in the United States. Previously, he held the position of politics editor at The Atlantic, where he was responsible for overseeing a significant portion of the publication’s digital coverage of the election in 2020 and the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. His group released articles about the death of Rep. Jamie Raskin’s son in advance of the violence in the Capitol, the misconceptions that liberals have about Latinos who support Trump, and the way that covid transformed a single Colorado county into a struggle for the entire nation.

Prior to beginning his employment at The Atlantic, Nick worked at HuffPost as a senior enterprise editor. The Knight Award for Public Service in 2016 and the Writers Guild Award in 2017 were both awarded to him for the stories that he worked on. As a result of the reporting of his team, Nevada prisons stopped using guns to control convicts, and the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that resulted in the closure of a corporation that boasted about the health benefits of infusing individuals with “young blood.” In addition to that, he oversaw an investigation into deaths that occurred in jails, which was a finalist for the Livingston Award. Additionally, he developed an email weekly that achieved a subscriber count of about 200,000 in its first year of operation. Apart from that, Nick has also held the position of senior editor at Mother Jones and has been a blogger for the Economist.
